Summary

Robin Loxleigh and his sister Marianne are the hit of the Season, so attractive and delightful that nobody looks behind their pretty faces。

Until Robin sets his sights on Sir John Hartlebury’s heiress niece。 The notoriously graceless baronet isn’t impressed by good looks, or fooled by false charm。 He’s sure Robin is a liar—a fortune hunter, a card sharp, and a heartless, greedy fraud—and he’ll protect his niece, whatever it takes。

Then, just when Hart thinks he has Robin at his mercy, things take a sharp left turn。 And as the grumpy baronet and the glib fortune hunter start to understand each other, they also find themselves starting to care—more than either of them thought possible。

But Robin's cheated and lied and let people down for money。 Can a professional rogue earn an honest happy ever after?

Awesome book。 Just splendid。 Great story。 Great characters。 I love Georgette Heyer and this totally had that Regency feel (except with a more overt romance and explicit MM sex, of course)。 I can't wait to read another by this author。I truly can't recommend this book enough。 Awesome book。 Just splendid。 Great story。 Great characters。 I love Georgette Heyer and this totally had that Regency feel (except with a more overt romance and explicit MM sex, of course)。 I can't wait to read another by this author。I truly can't recommend this book enough。 。。。more

Holy shit, that was beyond amazing。 KJ Charles is a gem。 Hot damn, can that woman write。 An absorbing, perfectly paced plot, authentic, lovable, flawed, wonderfully rounded main and side characters, s-c-o-r-c-h-i-n-g hot sex scenes, and the aforementioned, unparalleled in the MM historical romance world (and prob any other romance world or any genre for that matter) phenomenally written narrative, something I am clearly struggling with here myself this morning。 In case you couldn't tell, I loved Holy shit, that was beyond amazing。 KJ Charles is a gem。 Hot damn, can that woman write。 An absorbing, perfectly paced plot, authentic, lovable, flawed, wonderfully rounded main and side characters, s-c-o-r-c-h-i-n-g hot sex scenes, and the aforementioned, unparalleled in the MM historical romance world (and prob any other romance world or any genre for that matter) phenomenally written narrative, something I am clearly struggling with here myself this morning。 In case you couldn't tell, I loved it。 You will too。 Read it now。 。。。more

OMG I adored this book 😍😍

K。J。 Charles at her best: interesting characters, realistic problems typical for the historical setting, love interests that you care about and really want to work out and a great sense of humour。 Highly enjoyable!

You want fun, comforting pandemic reading? You want K。 J。 Charles。 My favorites remain the Will Darling Adventures but this was nearly as good, and has everything I love about this author。 Relationship/queer-positive moments, compelling and interesting characters, sparkling dialogue everywhere - and it's both uplifting and believable。 I loved both main characters, but there were several scene-stealing moments by secondary ones (Lady Evangeline! Write a whole book about HER!)。 You want fun, comforting pandemic reading? Cute。 Robin and Marianne were determined to find financial security。 If that meant robbing or cheating the rich in Society, so be it。 Hart is determined to protect his niece, Alice, who is plain-looking, but smarter than almost anyone realizes。 Hart is also considered plain-looking, and he's fairly tactless, but he's sweet to the people he loves。 Siblings Robin and Marianne, and Hart and his sister Edwina, all had terrible parents, but still had empathy towards other people。Robin thinks about ho Cute。 Robin and Marianne were determined to find financial security。 If that meant robbing or cheating the rich in Society, so be it。 Hart is determined to protect his niece, Alice, who is plain-looking, but smarter than almost anyone realizes。 Hart is also considered plain-looking, and he's fairly tactless, but he's sweet to the people he loves。 Siblings Robin and Marianne, and Hart and his sister Edwina, all had terrible parents, but still had empathy towards other people。Robin thinks about how he'd be a better husband to Alice than many men in Society who are also interested in her for the wealth she's rumored to have inherited。 He wouldn't be cruel to her, and he does appreciate her for her mind。 However, Robin has a deep appreciation for Hart's brawny thighs, too。 It's a quandary, but Robin and Hart sort of joust their way into some form of communication。 There are twists and turns, but this is a gentler book than a number of K。J。 Charles' books。 I'm good with a book being a little more on the fluffy side than Ms。 Charles' usual。 Several of the characters are clever, though not necessarily as clever as they think they are, and likeable。 I enjoyed this one。 。。。more

I waited 24 whole hours after this came out to read it。 It's a delight, a wonderful take on a premise that could have been fairly sour, and some very very clear-eyed views of the marriage economy。 So, everything I love about KJ Charles' books。 I waited 24 whole hours after this came out to read it。 It's a delight, a wonderful take on a premise that could have been fairly sour, and some very very clear-eyed views of the marriage economy。 So, everything I love about KJ Charles' books。 。。。more

Engaging and very readable queer regency romance。 Full of tropes, thoughts on family, magnificent thighs, card playing, mathematics, and many other delights。 A fun romp all around。

Sweet and fun romp。 I had a little trouble getting into it, and some uneven storytelling, but a sweet little story with some in intense chemistry。

The highlight of the book comes late but the defence scene controlled by a ruthless Marianne and a loyal Robin is glorious and tells you everything about love and family。 Alone for those short pages the book is worth reading but of course you need most of the pages before to understand why it's brilliant and not only a witty firework。 I'm not the biggest fan of Regency novels if they don't have a paranormal twist or take place in some alternate universe but if they are like The Gentle Art of For The highlight of the book comes late but the defence scene controlled by a ruthless Marianne and a loyal Robin is glorious and tells you everything about love and family。 Alone for those short pages the book is worth reading but of course you need most of the pages before to understand why it's brilliant and not only a witty firework。 I'm not the biggest fan of Regency novels if they don't have a paranormal twist or take place in some alternate universe but if they are like The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting I might change that。 。。。more

As always, an incredibly charming and funny book。 KJ Charles is one of my few auto-buy authors, and she did not disappoint。 I definitely needed a book like this in these difficult times。 Everybody is a little morally grey and rough around the edges, good people who sometimes do bad things。 I adored the side characters, especially Alice and Marianne, and wow that climax was incredible。 I loved the math jokes, Robin's appreciation for Hart's thick thighs, and the bug racing scene at the end (which As always, an incredibly charming and funny book。 KJ Charles is one of my few auto-buy authors, and she did not disappoint。 I definitely needed a book like this in these difficult times。 Everybody is a little morally grey and rough around the edges, good people who sometimes do bad things。 I adored the side characters, especially Alice and Marianne, and wow that climax was incredible。 I loved the math jokes, Robin's appreciation for Hart's thick thighs, and the bug racing scene at the end (which, according to KJ Charles, what supposed to be "big racing" in the outline but she decided to run with the typo)。 Absolutely wonderful。I hope there is more to come from this little corner of the world。 I would love to learn more about Toby and how Robin and Marianne Loxsleigh of Nottinghamshire acquired their names! 。。。more

3。5 stars。I thought this was well written with great characters, including supporting characters like Marianne。 I read the first half super quickly although lost some of my interest towards the end。Overall, it was pretty good! It just wasn’t super impactful on me。

The story isn't bad at all。 For some reason, though, I find myself struggling to keep going。 Maybe it's just my mood, but I'm stopping。 The story isn't bad at all。 For some reason, though, I find myself struggling to keep going。 Maybe it's just my mood, but I'm stopping。 。。。more

Fabulous Reading The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting was an absolute pleasure。 Just like all the other books by KJ Charles , The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting is a tightly woven and written story, with interesting characters , superb banter and lots of steam。

Bliufish

My ultimate favorite KJ Charles book。 I love historical function genre, and sometimes have to swallow my disdain for common unavoidable elements of the genre (class hierarchy, double standards for women’s behavior, etc)。 Those elements come up here, but Charles smashes and resolves them in such a satisfying way。

Oh, to live in a time where being suitably cutting at a gathering of two hundred is enough to horribly shame your enemies into mostly relenting。 God, I miss the opportunity to Make A Scene。

This book was so adorable。 I typically avoid historical romances like no one's business。 Just not my thing。 But this book was recommended by someone whose taste I trust and I am so glad I gave it a go。 It was fun and charming, with vibrant characters, great dialogue, and sex scenes that were hot and sweet and even a little witty at times。 I adored Robin and Hart。 Their opposites attract, relationship-of-convenience-to-romance, the-gentleman-and-the-rogue thing worked for me。 Though Robin isn't r This book was so adorable。 I typically avoid historical romances like no one's business。 Just not my thing。 But this book was recommended by someone whose taste I trust and I am so glad I gave it a go。 It was fun and charming, with vibrant characters, great dialogue, and sex scenes that were hot and sweet and even a little witty at times。 I adored Robin and Hart。 Their opposites attract, relationship-of-convenience-to-romance, the-gentleman-and-the-rogue thing worked for me。 Though Robin isn't really a rogue at all。 He's just a super adorable young man who wasn't taught any skills outside of the con but still manages to have a strong (albeit idiosyncratic) moral code, a desperate wish for security for himself and his sister, and a heart big enough to hold the world。 And while Hart likes to scowl and be antisocial, all he wants take care of the people he thinks of as his and to love and be loved。The side characters were fantastic (Alice! Marianne!) and I would read the hell of a spin-off about about the adventures of some of the female characters。 I don't want to specify because, spoilers, but if you read the book, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about。It was a lovely, refreshing read that completely charmed me。 My only complaint is that it's a stand alone and I want to read more of Robin, Hart, and the whole cast of characters。 。。。more
